Welcome to Mangia! This folder contains an installer that will provide you with a demo version of Mangia 1.2, the acclaimed "smart cookbook" for Macintosh. This special demo version is provided to give you a "taste of Mangia", and it includes all the features and capabilities as the commercial version, with three differences:
ΓÇó It is limited in time: after two months, it simply ceases to work. At that time you can upgrade to the full version, complete with manual, by calling (800) JOT-DOWN to order or find the location of your nearest reseller. (There is also an order form available under the File menu using the command "Order Mangia.") Please note that any recipe files you create with the demo will work perfectly with the upgraded version.
ΓÇó To conserve disk space, this version comes with only one recipe file containing a small fraction of the number of recipes that come with the released Mangia.
ΓÇó Also to conserve disk space, there are many fewer recipe layouts available here.
TO INSTALL MANGIA
When you double-click the icon "Install Mangia Demo", an installer program will run and place a new folder, entitled "Mangia ƒ" on your hard drive. That folder will contain the "Mangia Demo" application and a single cookbook file, Mangia Miscellany, along with the Mangia! Dictionary. They will all live happily together in the "Mangia ƒ" folder, and we recommend that you keep them there. Should you feel the need to reorganize your disk, however, you only really need to keep Mangia Demo and Mangia! Dictionary together in the same folder.

Most people agree that Mangia is an exceptionally accessible piece of software, but if you are comforted by having a manual nearby, give us a call and we'll send you a special abridged version of what the Washington Post called "one of the wittiest and most helpful software manuals ever written." Version 1.2 of Mangia! also includes a set of attractive, professionally designed recipe layouts, together with supporting graphics and several TrueTypeΓäó fonts. These are automatically put in the appropriate place on your hard drive by the Installer. But in case you'd like to remove them, the font files are named ... Caslon, Century Cond, Cursive Elegant, Fruit, Futena, Garamond (NOT Adobe Garamond, or ITC Garamond, but just plain Garamond), Technical, and Trade Condensed. If you remove them, Mangia! will try to use commonly available fonts in their place in the recipes, but it just won't be the same...
Mangia! also provides a screen font called Mangia, and you can remove that as well. However, we recommend that you keep it. Its design is in keeping with the overall look of Mangia, and it doesn't take up much space.
Regarding recipe layouts: you'll find that the "designer" layouts (the ones with fancy names, that show up in the bottom part of the layout-selection menu) don't look right when previewed on screen. This is because they are designed for the printed page, where material breaks across pages.
Mangia! will run on any Macintosh with two Megabytes of memory. It does require System 6.0.5 or greater, and it is fully compatible with System 7. As installed, it asks for 812KBytes to run. It will accept as little as 650K, which should be sufficient on small-screen, black-and-white Macs (Plus, SE, Classic). While Mangia! will run in a small amount of memory, you will notice that it runs significantly faster if you can spare it more.
If you want to run Mangia! on two or more computers, be sure to install it using the installer, not by copying the files that it leaves with you. This will make sure that Mangia! knows about all the food terms that you add to the dictionary.
